Investment

Focus. Early stage venture capital UK based opportunities with a particular emphasis on information technology, telecommunications and software.

Type of Opportunity. Differentiated companies with experienced and proven management operating in growing niche markets with a proven and established product and achieving product sales.

Investment Size and Markets. Investments range from £50 – 250k and are generally considered as part of an overall development capital transaction. Products should be capable of achieving revenues internationally either directly or through a form of joint venture or third party distribution agreement. Products capable of expansion into East Asian and Middle Eastern markets are of particular interest.

Merchanting

Focus. Development of niche retail concepts, products and services. Product development utilising East Asian design and manufacturing expertise are of particular interest.

Markets. The retail concept, product or service should be capable of appealing to East Asian or Middle Eastern consumer markets and may be marketed and distributed through an established Hong Kong based trading company or directly through a joint venture or third party distribution agreement.

Consultancy

Menlo provides consultancy and related services with a particular emphasis on UK corporate clients seeking to establish or already operating in East Asian or the Middle Eastern markets. Potential clients should be seeking advice in relation to market dynamics, regional trends and potential joint venture or third party distributors. Appointments may be through a formal board appointment or representative agreement.

Corporate Advisory Network

Ability to facilitate introductions to a well-established network of UK and Asian based strategic, legal and corporate advisers, including advice relating to fund raisings, listings, mergers and acquisitions, across a wide range of sectors from minerals to software, property to media, internet to traditional engineering, banking and finance to agriculture, oil & gas and new energy including companies providing clean technology products and services.

James is the Founder and Managing Partner of Menlo Partners LLP.

James is a business studies and engineering graduate from the University of Strathclyde. After four years with the international management consulting division of Arthur Andersen & Co., now re-named Accenture (www.accenture.com), he joined N M Rothschild & Sons Limited (www.Rothschild.com). He transferred to Rothschild Ventures Limited in 1988, where, latterly as a Director, he was involved in leading a wide range of investments including, for example, Rothschild Ventures investments in Research Machines Plc (www.rm.com), Maison Blanc Limited and Peacock’s Stores as well as holding a number of non-executive directorships.

He joined ECI Partners LLP (www.ecipartners.com), one of the longest established and leading mid-market private equity firms in the UK, in 1995 and ECI transactions in which he was involved include Nuaire (a management buy-out of a commercial and industrial ventilation equipment manufacturer: www.nuaire.co.uk), Tragus (a buy-in to the Café Rouge and Bella Pasta restaurant chains acquired from Whitbread Plc: www.tragusgroup.com), Taylor (a buy-in to a waste container manufacturer: www.taylorbins.co.uk), Racal Acoustics (a buy-out of a specialist manufacturer of communications equipment primarily for the defence and avionics sectors subsequently acquired by Esterline: www.esterline.com) and Kelvin Hughes Limited (a buy-out of the leading integrated supplier of navigational systems and data to the global marine and defence sectors from Smiths Industries: www.kelvinhughes.com).
James retired from ECI in March, 2013 and founded Menlo Partners LLP.

James has been involved in the UK and European private equity industry for 25 years and is well known in this industry. He recently addressed, for example, the Euromoney 14th Annual Syndicated Loan Conference (March, 2012), Portfolio Company Refinancing Conference (January, 2012) and the 13th Annual Mezzanine Finance Conference (November, 2011). Other recent speaking engagements include the London Business School Private Equity Symposium (June, 2011) and guest speaker at the Stanford Graduate School of Business - Enterprise Ireland Strategic Leadership Programme Seminar. He is an active supporter of the Professional Boards Forum to promote women non-executive directors. He has been widely quoted in leading private equity industry journals such as Private Equity International, Unquote, Private Equity News, Preqin, European Venture Capital Journal and Acquisitions Monthly. He has also featured in the national press in connection with industry issues and trends as well as commenting on specific transactions. He was also an industry awards panelist at the Private Equity News Awards for Excellence in Private Equity Advisory Services Europe (2011) and has made a number of live media appearances on, for example, the BBC, CNBC and Bloomberg.

Jackson Ng, Senior Adviser

Professional Background

Jackson Ng

Jackson was raised in the United Kingdom and has also lived in Australia, Singapore and The Netherlands. He read law at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and also the London School of Economics and Political Science. After graduating from University, he worked full time as a lawyer before being active in politics. He is equally fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese and has a working knowledge of Dutch.

As a lawyer, Jackson is a specialist in inward Chinese investment to the UK where he is often instructed by high net worth Chinese individuals, East Asian banks, SMEs, SOEs, PLCs, and various foreign governments agencies to advise them with regards to their affairs in the UK, especially on commercial / corporate and litigation matters.

Matters that he has advised on include issues relating to Aston Martin's entry into China, commercial ventures between China Golddeal and De La Rue, Chang Hwa Bank and Hua Nan Bank's banking affairs in the UK. He was also retained by a Dutch law firm in 2011 - 2012 as a China specialist to advise them on various Dutch ventures in China / Hong Kong. Jackson still maintains his links with the legal profession and is listed as a Senior Associate at prominent British-Chinese law firm based in the City of London (www.cnsolicitors.com).

As well as being a lawyer, Jackson also works in politics where he is currently leading the Conservative Friends of the Chinese (CFOC) as their Director. CFOC is a national group fully affiliated with the Conservative Party that champions the values and culture of the British Chinese communities and strongly advocates for closer relations between China and Britain in the Conservative Party. (www.conservativefriendsofthechinese.co.uk).

Since 2011, Jackson also spends part of his time in advising and assisting The Lord Wei of Shoreditch at the Houses of Parliament on a wide range of issues; particularly on Sino - British related matters such as the All Party Parliamentary Group on China (APPCG) and the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for East Asian Business.

In his spare time, Jackson works closely with leading British Chinese community leaders on designing social and civil projects to help the youth of the British Chinese community and advises various Chinese professional and student groups. Currently, he is involved with the setting up of a youth leadership programme where he serves as its Director alongside other charities that he advises and supports.
